Bifacial BC VS Bifacial TOPCon: Efficiency Characteristics and Scenario-Based Selection Logic

From the perspective of conversion efficiency only, with all other factors excluded: For bifacial BC modules, the back-contact process places all electrodes on the rear side of the cell. The total number of rear-side fingers and metal coverage area are inherently much higher than those on the single rear side of bifacial TOPCon cells. Thanks to this process, there is no shading from metal fingers on the cell front side. Mass-produced products currently deliver a higher front-side conversion efficiency than TOPCon. However, the greater rear-side metal shading leads to lower rear-side power generation capability under most operating conditions compared with TOPCon modules. As a result, its bifaciality is generally lower than that of TOPCon, while parity can be achieved in a few cases. Under normal conditions, TOPCon holds an inherent advantage when only the bifaciality metric is considered.
From end users’ standpoint, neither product is inherently superior. Selection must be made according to real-world application scenarios. Judging which one is better without considering the application scenario is imprecise and irresponsible.
